Bicycle Promotion for Spring
May is National Bicycling Month. More and more people of all ages are turning to bicycling for both fitness training and pure recreational enjoyment. Technology has provided better, faster and safer equipment and apparel as the demand has grown. Bicycle trails have sprung up all over and are constantly on the increase. Keep your recreational product database up to date and use this popular pastime to generate some new advertising dollars.
Directions:
1. Feature a banner page or a section highlighting the importance of safe biking practices and equipment.
2. Target the local bicycle specialty stores, sporting good stores, department stores, mass merchandisers, sporting apparel retailers, area parks with bike trails, bicycle rentals, fitness centers with indoor biking tracks, athletic shoe retailers, etc.
3. Include features on the development of the recreational biking industry in the recent past, the changes in equipment, benefits from regular biking exercise, etc. Tips of bicycle safety and how to plan an event or set up a trial safety course can be found from the League of American Bicyclists at http://www.bikeleague.org. Encourage your local advertisers to sponsor a safety check day or safe riding instruction course in May at a central location or in one of the large advertiser’s parking lots. Give special discounts or coupons for repairs and/or merchandise to those cyclists bringing their bikes in that day for a safety check.

Option Two - Pedal Power
It’s time to start planning your summer advertising. Think about what kids like to do during the summer. It’s bicycle time. This also means it is accident time. Increase your lineage by reminding children and parents about bicycle safety.
1) Plan a banner page incorporating bicycle safety tips on the page. You can obtain bicycle safety tips from the League of American Bicyclists http://www.bikeleague.org.
2) Solicit retailers, doctors, hospitals, attorneys, insurance agents, law enforcement agencies, etc., to take out ads on the page. Don’t forget to sponsor a safety tip yourself.
3) Feature the page during the last week of school and again shortly after school is out for the summer. Be sure to include information on bicycle safety programs that are featured by the DMV or police departments in your city/state. Incorporate co-op if possible. See checklist 12 for bicycle co-op targets.
