1. Run a page/section for hometown shopping.
2. Target all the local retail establishments, concentrating on independently owned businesses. Local restaurants, theaters and entertainment venues are also good possibilities.
3. Run the page/section through the holiday shopping season. Feature articles showing how a local community benefits when their citizens support their local businesses, how many jobs are created, how local sales taxes benefits everyone in the community, what happens to a sense of community when local businesses close down, etc. Profiles can be run on owners of local businesses on adjacent pages.
Broadcast Directions:
1. Sign up local businesses for a hometown shopping promotion. An easy promo would be a giveaway package the consumers can qualify for by signing up in local stores. Appropriate prizes would be meals in local restaurants, hometown branded merchandise offered by civic organizations, historical societies, chamber of commerce, etc. gifts for the consumers out-of-town relatives, weekend stays at local inns, theater tickets, etc.
