Publishers News was onsite at the National Newspaper Association’s 140th Annual Convention and Trade Show, held September 17–18, 2026, in Detroit, Michigan, and co‑hosted with the Michigan Press Association. While our previous issue covered the full agenda and program details, attending the event firsthand revealed something far more powerful than any schedule could capture: genuine enthusiasm, renewed optimism, and a level of camaraderie that exceeded even the most hopeful expectations. Simply put—there were smiles everywhere.
The energy across the convention floor was unmistakable. Attendees arrived ready to learn, collaborate, and celebrate the resilience of community newspapers. The seminar lineup hit the mark perfectly, offering practical, timely sessions that addressed the real‑world challenges publishers face today. From revenue innovation to postal updates, from newsroom workflow improvements to community engagement strategies, every seminar felt tailored to the needs of local publishers who continue to push forward despite industry headwinds. Conversations spilled out of meeting rooms and into hallways, where networking became just as valuable as the formal programming. Many publishers told us that the ability to openly share ideas—and hear what’s working in other communities—was one of the most beneficial aspects of the entire event.

Equally important was the strong presence of newspaper suppliers and service providers. Their booths were busy throughout the show, with attendees eager to explore new tools, technologies, and partnerships. Whether it was production solutions, digital platforms, circulation tools, or advertising services, publishers found fresh resources to help strengthen their operations and build on existing success stories. The trade show floor buzzed with possibility, and many attendees left with actionable ideas they could bring home immediately.
And then there was the entertainment—Detroit style. The signature social event aboard the Detroit Princess Riverboat was a highlight that attendees will be talking about for years. Cruising along the Detroit River while enjoying live Motown performances, DJ dance floors, and a full buffet created the perfect atmosphere for unwinding after a full day of learning. The combination of music, movement, and waterfront views brought everyone together in a way that felt celebratory and uniquely Detroit. It wasn’t just a party; it was a reminder of the joy and community spirit that fuels local journalism.
By the time the convention wrapped up, one thing was clear: the National Newspaper Association delivered a standout event. Executive Director Lynne Lance and the entire NNA staff executed a smooth, well‑organized, and genuinely uplifting convention that left publishers feeling inspired and supported. The Detroit gathering wasn’t just a meeting—it was a reaffirmation of the strength, creativity, and determination that define America’s community newspapers.
For Publishers News, being onsite allowed us to witness firsthand the passion that continues to drive this industry forward. The 140th Annual Convention wasn’t just successful—it was a celebration of the people who keep local journalism alive, relevant, and thriving.
