The symposium showcased a strong lineup of professional development sessions designed to help publishers, editors, and media leaders navigate an evolving publishing landscape. With a focus on innovation, audience growth, revenue diversification, and future opportunities, attendees were encouraged not only to strengthen their current operations but also to think bigger about what lies ahead for the industry.
Recognizing the demanding schedules of today’s publishing professionals, Magazines Canada also offered virtual streaming access, allowing those unable to attend in person to participate remotely and benefit from the event’s valuable programming.
This year’s symposium was held at the historic Guild Inn Estate in Scarborough, Ontario. Originally established in 1932 by Rosa Breithaupt Hewetson, the estate became a centre for artistic expression through the creation of The Guild of All Arts, an artist cooperative dedicated to supporting Canadian artists and preserving the importance of the arts in society. The picturesque property features expansive grounds and stunning views along the shoreline of Lake Ontario, providing a memorable setting for the event.
A highlight of the symposium was its impressive roster of speakers, each bringing valuable expertise and practical insights to attendees.
Among them was Jacquie Loch, a branded content and revenue generation expert known for driving audience engagement, delivering results, and cultivating strong C-suite relationships.
Attendees also heard from David Topping, Head of Newsletters at the Toronto Star, who shared how newsletters evolved into a multi-million-dollar revenue stream for one of Canada’s leading news organizations.
Nina Wagner, Group Vice President at Alive Publishing Group, offered perspectives drawn from her extensive experience in business strategy, operations, audience development, and revenue diversification.
Completing the speaker lineup was Jason Maghanoy, Group Publisher at SJC Media. Maghanoy oversees the company’s experiential business, Wonder, in addition to leading well-known media brands including Canadian Business, Maclean’s, and Toronto Life.
Beyond the keynote presentations, attendees participated in breakout roundtable discussions covering a wide range of topics facing today’s magazine publishers. These interactive sessions encouraged peer-to-peer learning, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas among industry professionals.
The event also provided opportunities for networking throughout the day, including a well-received luncheon and a closing cocktail reception where attendees continued conversations, forged new connections, and explored potential collaborations.
Publishers News was delighted to be part of this year’s symposium and applauds Magazines Canada for continuing to create valuable opportunities for professional growth and industry engagement. Events such as the Magazines Canada Symposium play an important role in supporting publishers at every stage of their careers while helping to strengthen the future of Canadian magazine media.
